If you are like most people, you will have good days and bad days betting on horses. Horse racing handicapping is an art and not a science and that may be why we seem to have good days and bad days. The more consistent you are, the better your chances of making money on the races. Therefore, figuring out which races to bet on or even which days to bet on races, is important.

In my own case, I noticed that Fridays were particularly bad days for me to try to make any money on the races. One of my favorite tracks is Aqueduct in New York. I have played it for years and really enjoy the racing there. Overall, I think that they give you good races that are run pretty straight. But I still have bad days betting on the races there so I did a little research and have found out why I lose on some days and do better on other days.

If you use past performances to handicap a horse race you know that you need horses to be consistent in order to make money. In other words, if a horse shows that it is in good form and can run 6 furlongs in 1:10 flat, you need to rely on that when making your decisions. Handicapping relies on consistency for the most part.

I have found there is a direct correlation between the purse and type of race and the consistency of the runners. In cheap claiming races, for instance, it is hard for the horses to remain consistent because many of them are dealing with injuries or have other problems, such as little ability. So unless you are good at foretelling which horses will improve and which ones will regress, handicapping cheap claiming races or other cheap races is difficult. They produce more longshot winners, and while that produces some hefty mutuels, the problem is that there are so many longshots, you just don’t know which ones to back.

Looking at the purses for the week of February 15, 2010 to February 21, 2010, at Aqueduct, it is easy to see why I struggle on Fridays. Monday was a holiday and therefore had a bigger crowd than you usually get on a weekday. In order to treat that crowd right, Aqueduct had some good races with a high average purse around $37,900. On top of that, there were only three claiming races. Three favorites won that day and not one favorite finished out of the money.

Looking at the races on Wednesday, the 17th, the average purse in the 9 races that day was only $28,830. Though 4 favorites did manage to win that day, 3 favorites finished off the board completely. Looking at Thursday the 18th, the average purse was $23,660 and there were 7 claiming races on the card. Once again, three favorites did manage to win, but three others ran out of the money.

You may argue that favorites running out of the money produces an opportunity to make money for a good handicapper, but when races are cheap and favorites run out of the money, it is also an indication that the horses are inconsistent and that presents many problems for a handicapper.

If you are not great at horse racing handicapping and want to try to make some money betting on horses, the best advice is to stick with the most consistent races. A good way to determine which races might be the most consistent is to look at the purses on the days when you want to put a little flutter on the races. The higher the purses and fewer claiming races, the better your chances of finding a horse that will run true to form.

Online horse racing games are becoming more popular because of their convenience. Truly, the internet has changed the way we look at a lot of things. Today, a lot of things can be done online and horse racing is just one of those things. People like online horse racing games because this enables them to enjoy the thrill of a horse race without the hassles of having to go to a track.

There are various types of online horse racing games. Some just broadcast the results of actual races online and allow people to bet on those events. Some are actual games in which a person can play the part of the jockey and race his horse against others to win prizes or to get bragging rights. Other online horse racing games put players in the shoes of a trainer. They take care of their virtual thoroughbreds and train them for races against other players.

Although these games can be quite entertaining for some people, the fact remains that most people play online horse racing games because of the gambling. Online horse racing games provide what a gambler needs without requiring that person to even leave the comfort of his chair.

Betting in online horse racing games are done electronically. People’s bets in online horse racing games can be categorized into two:

1) Monetary – Of course, most of the people who bet on online horse racing games do so with real money. How do they do this? This can usually done through credit cards or an electronic transfer. Some people can also choose to apply for an electronic account which may be reloaded through the bank.

One issue concerning the online horse racing game is the fact that the prizes at stake are not really as big as what you would expect to win in an actual race track. This may be because of the fact that online horse racing games are still in their early stages. This means that fewer people bet on these races compared to betting on the track.

2) In-game – certain MMORPGs or Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Games incorporate a sort of online horse racing game in order to add excitement. Often, the prize at stake is a rare item which can be used within the game. Simulation online horse racing games such as the training game talked about earlier can also hold races with in-game prizes at stake. These items often have properties that would improve your chances every time you race. There are also people who sell these in-game items for actual cash.

One issue surrounding this is the fact that some gamers may take an online horse racing game too seriously and would pay some heavy costs for something that doesn’t really exist.

Now, there are some concerns surrounding the online horse racing game. First of all, computers do determine the outcome of races. How can a person be sure that the race was actually fair? Computers can be manipulated by people to produce their desired outcome. This means that the creator of the online horse racing game can choose which horse will win. Of course, some people say that it is not true. They often make use of programs that show accurate results without the need for human intervention. However, the very fact that it can be manipulated makes people wary. Think about this when you are looking for an online horse racing game.

Betting on horse racing has taken on a new shape in the last ten years in the United Kingdom, with more all weather type racing in the calendar. Going against the grain of traditional forms of grass turf racing, such as Ascot and Newmarket.

All weather racecourses are holding more and more racing all the year round.
Unlike the winter jumps season, all weather racing very rarely is taken hostage by poor weather conditions such as frost or snow. When it is, you know it is time to look elsewhere for an investment because the conditions will be so bad that the horses are more likely to want to be anywhere but the racetrack!

Many purists turn there backs on this type of racing. However with more trainers prepared to use these surfaces for campaigns throughout the year and with higher class horses also now specialising on these surfaces. This type of racing is set to go only one way, and that is forward. Many small owners are able to compete at this level and enjoy success, so the demand for this racing for many is high.

As all year round punters look to take advantage of as many situations as possible, these all weather tracks help to give punters betting on horse racing greater choice.
It would take far too much space to go in to great detail about the intricacies of every track, but here we are going to highlight some of the more important things to do and NOT do when betting on horse racing at certain tracks.

Lingfield Park all weather racecourse is a popular all weather track and throughout the racing year, many high class races take place at this venue with all of the top trainers prepared to run their horses here.

Lingfields’ all weather track is renowned for being a fair racing venue, however if you are an each way punter you need to reconsider your betting strategy. On a regular basis it is common to see an entire field bunching up over the last two furlongs and separated by minimal margins. This means often selections can look locked on for a place with a furlong to go, only to be run in to fourth position outside of the money in the dying yards!

Be warned betting on horses each way at Lingfield is a dangerous game to play.

Southwell racecourse is another fantastic all weather racing venue holding some good racing all year round. Course specialists in some shape or form tend to hold sway here. You will regularly see horses that only ever win at Southwell and do so regularly!

Keeping these course specialists on side when betting on horse racing, or indeed spotting the potential specialists before it is common knowledge. Can lead to healthy gains betting at this venue.

Another all weather circuit heavily used year round is the Woverhampton track. There is a disadvantage generally here being drawn on the inside stalls one and two. The track surface here tends to ride a little deeper than the rest of the surface and the statistics correlate to this. The bias is especially strong over the minimum trip of five furlongs with berths one and two having a poor strike rate.

It is always great on any of these all weather tracks to see C+D (course and distance) next to a runners name. It helps just to highlight that at the right grade, the horse is able to handle the tight bends on some of the tracks and indeed the racing surface itself.

One thing you should consider at any of the venues is the trainers ability to win races at the course. Always check out the trainers strike rate at the track of your potential bet. Statistics do not lie, if a trainer has a strike rate of over twenty percent it is not your reason to wonder why. Just understand that due to the training regimes of differing trainers, some are more apt at readying winners at certain tracks than others.

Getting to know the individual racecourses can take some time, but once learned betting on horse racing at these all weather venues creates more choice. Learning to bet wisely at these courses not only opens up a wider variety of race for the punter but also the ability for betting on horse racing all year round no matter what the weather is doing (within reason!).
