Car A is traveling north on Highway 16 and car B is traveling west on Highway 83. Each car is approaching the intersection of these highways. At a certain moment, car A is 60 km from the intersection and traveling at 57 km/h while car B is 80 km from the intersection and traveling at 81 km/h. How fast is the distance between the cars changing at that moment?

  1. John says:

    in 1 hr car A travels 57km north and car B 81km west. The speed at which the distance between them changes is just found by pythagoras – sqrt (A^2 + B^2) because they are at right angles.
    ie
    result = sqrt (3249 + 6561) = SQRT (9810) = 99 kph.
